Position: Director
Hiring for the upcoming season: 1 position

Camp Northern Lights (CNL) is looking for a qualified Camp Director to lead our
summer camp team and oversee the on-site program for the months of
July and August. The Camp Director will work with the CNL full-time staff to provide
our campers with an amazing camp experience. The Camp Director’s abilities will
include proven leadership skills, strong organizational skills, a love of summer camp,
problem-solving skills, and the ability to work with children and staff.

General Duties & Responsibilities:

● Work with the Board of Directors in the following areas:

o Hiring and training staff
o Setting schedules and assigning staff to groups
o Ensuring program equipment and resources are in good condition and supply
o Ensuring that the needs and expectations of the campers are being met
o ensure the development of procedures and protocols for the consideration of
staff and participants’ safety, well-being, and risk management

● Attend and participate in pre-camp and camp activities – camper recruitment,
counsellor recruitment, staff recruitment and training supervision of staff;
nightly/weekly staff meetings
● Confirmation and management of all camper and counselor
registrations
● Fundraising management – organizing tag day activities – recruiting locations, taggers,
supervisors
● Identifying and preparing grant applications
● Provide support for the ongoing operations of CNL
● Assist with enforcing safety procedures and protocols when necessary
● Assist with inventory and supplies, maintenance and purchasing of equipment for
programs
● Oversee Camp Operations including, but not limited to: kitchen and food management,
facilities and maintenance, adhere to operating budget
● Assist with the development, coordination, and implementation of the Camp
Programs, daily activities, weekly special events
● Work to create a supportive, caring and positive staff team

Required Characteristics:

● Previous experience working with children and camps
● Demonstrated experience planning and leading camp/recreation programs
● Experience in the Outdoor Education field and a strong understanding of Experiential
Education pedagogy
● Post Secondary education in Education, Outdoor Recreation, Leisure, or similar program
● A combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the
responsibilities of this position may be considered in lieu of stated education and
experience requirements.
● Basic First Aid
● Valid G or G2 driver’s licence with clean driving records and must be eligible to drive
rental vehicle
● Computer skills
● Must submit a clean Vulnerable Sector Check

Additional Qualifications and Characteristics:

● Current NLS or Bronze Cross certification
● Current Boat License – Pleasure Craft Operator
● Certification in canoeing: ORCKA and/or Paddle Canada in Canoeing/flat-water and
canoe tripping
● Experience and certification with low ropes
● Team building, mentoring, and facilitating expertise
● Strong organizational and time management skills
● Team player with demonstrated leadership, interpersonal and communication skills

Position: Waterfront Lead
Hiring for the upcoming season: 1 position

Pre-Camp Season:

    • Inspect all waterfront conditions
    • Prepare waterfront for season 
    • Ensure all safety and rescue equipment is in good repair and secure at the waterfront
    • Prepare an inventory of equipment and list of repairs and replacements necessагу
    • Become familiar with and ensure the system for swimmer and canoe identification is set up
    • Ensure first-aid kit is complete and present at waterfront
    • Attend and participate in pre-camp activities (tag day, set up weekend, orientation)

During Camp Season:

    • Responsible for safety at the Waterfront 
    • Inspect Waterfront and camp fire areas daily 
    • Submit daily report to the Camp Director 
    • Maintain order to the waterfront supply shed and lifejacket shed inspect first aid kit daily
    • On the first day of camp, evaluate all swimmers abilities and designate areas according to swimmer ability
    • Adhere to all lifesaving requirement and Ontario Camping Association standards
    • Develop and implement waterfront emergency procedures including water search patterns
    • Encourage all campers to participate in planned activities
    • Disposal and management of all recycling for entire campgrounds (after meals)

End of Season:

    • Submit end of season written report on waterfront activities 
    • Submit end of season inventory of safety and waterfront equipment 
    • Make recommendations for future summer waterfront programs
    • Attend and participate in end of season activities (clean up week – final week of summer)

Daily:

    • Coordinate and participate in daily schedule of activities and chores 
    • Assume responsibility for safety of campers and report all injuries to the Camp Director 
    • Participate in nightly campfire program 
    • Know where campers are at all times during sessions and special activities 
    • Ensure waterfront and campfire area is safe, clean and tidy 
    • Work to ensure that all campers are included, safe and comfortable 
    • Attend counsellor and staff meeting nightly 
    • Bring forth concerns to Camp Directors 
    • Report to the Director any counsellors who are absent or inactive during sessions
    • Participate in all other camp activities

General Duties:

    • Complete bed check of entire camp once a week 
    • Take part in evening curfew patrols with other scheduled staff 
    • Follow camp rules and expectations 
    • Serve as a positive role model for campers 
    • Perform other duties as assigned

Required Characteristics:

    • Current NLS Life Saving Certification 
    • Must be 18 years of age
    • Basic First Aid and CPR 
    • Pleasure Craft Operators Card 
    • Canoeing ORCKA Certification (encouraged) 
    • Experience working with children 
    • Camp and Lifeguard Experience 
    • Strong communication skills 
    • Team player

Position: Lifeguard
Hiring for the upcoming season: 2 positions

Pre-Camp Season:

Position: Camp Cook
Hiring for the upcoming season: 2 position

Pre-Camp Season:

    • Prepare the kitchen area for season 
    • Complete an inventory of all kitchen supplies and equipment 
    • Prepare a list of material required for the summer 
    • Review the menu for each camp session suitable for the age and dietary needs of the campers
    • Become familiar with kitchen equipment and location of supplies
    • Read and become familiar with ‘Cooking 101’ manual
    • Attend and participate in pre-camp activities (tag day, set up weekend, orientation)

During Camp Season:

    • Responsible for safety in the kitchen and eating area 
    • Required to adhere to OCA standards and Food Handler policies (must wear closed toe shoes, hat or head covering, and apron while cooking in the kitchen)
    • Inspect kitchen and dining and surrounding area daily
    • Maintaining kitchen hygiene 
    • Maintain order in the food storage supply room and water treatment system
    • Submit daily report to the Camp Director 
    • Encourage all campers to participate in planned activities 
    • Prepare the pre-planned menu 
    • Evaluate and supervise campers on clean up 
    • Serving moderate quantity of food (seconds available) coordinate dining hall and assist 
    • Food preparation and serving, 
    • Keep daily log of all foods served, quantities, number of people served and waste to evaluate quantities prepared match what is required
    • Dispose of all waste, garbage and recycling in main cabin
    • Support duties of Director (as assigned by Director)

End of Season:

    • Submit end of season written report on kitchen activities 
    • Submit end of season inventory of kitchen supplies and equipment 
    • Make recommendations for future year menus 
    • Attend and participate in end of season activities (clean up week – final week of summer)

Daily:

    • Coordinate and participate in daily schedule of activities and chores 
    • Assume responsibility for the safety of campers and report all injuries to the Camp Director 
    • Participate in nightly campfire program 
    • Know where campers are at all times during meals and clean up 
    • Ensure main cabin, deck and dining hall are clean and tidy 
    • Supervise the refilling of condiment supplies after each meal 
    • Ensure food is prepared to meet daily programming schedule 
    • Food preparation must begin in an appropriate amount of time before the meal is scheduled to be served 
    • Report to the Director any counsellors who are absent or inactive during chores and mealtime
    • Work to ensure all campers are included, safe and comfortable 
    • Attend counsellor and staff meeting nightly 
    • Bring forth concerns to Camp Directors 
    • Participate in all other camp activities

    • Perform other duties as assigned

Position: Arts & Crafts
Hiring for the upcoming season: 1 position

Pre-Camp Season:

    • Prepare Arts and Craft area for season 
    • Prepare an inventory of all Arts and Crafts supplies 
    • Prepare a list of material required for the summer 
    • Develop a program of craft activities for each camp session suitable for the age and abilities of the campers
    • Attend and participate in pre-camp activities (tag day, set up weekend, orientation)

During Camp Season:

    • Responsible for safety in the arts and crafts area
    • Inspect arts and craft shelter and surrounding area daily 
    • Maintain order in the Arts and Crafts storage shed 
    • Submit daily report to the Camp Director 
    • Evaluate all campers abilities and develop suitable activities 
    • Encourage all campers to participate in planned activities 
    • Supervise the maintenance of the outhouses and outdoor wash stand
    • Routine cabin inspections (spot checking) ensuring tidiness and cleanliness is maintained
    • Support duties of Director (as assigned by Director)

End of Season:

    • Submit end of season written report on arts and crafts activities 
    • Submit end of season inventory of arts and crafts materials/equipment 
    • Make recommendations for future summer programs
    • Attend and participate in end of season activities (clean up week – final week of summer)

Daily:

    • Coordinate and participate in daily schedule of activities and chores 
    • Assume responsibility for the safety of campers and report all injuries to the Camp Directors 
    • Participate in nightly campfire program

    • Ensure Arts and Crafts pavillion and surrounding area is clean and tidy

    • Responsible for safety in the games area

    • Submit daily report to the Camp Director
